The Importance of a Wig in Medical Crises

bc1c83d2426c963d719957f8d9d70fe1While many people view wigs as a fashion statement or accessory, for a large portion of the wig wearing population it is so much more than that. It gives a sense of normalcy during a difficult time of medical treatments such as with chemotherapy, it can aid in the healing process for conditions such as Trichotillomania, and it can hide insecurities and allow people to see you and not your disease as with Alopecia. When life doesn’t make sense and the future seems scary or uncertain, the perfect wig can add a much needed sense of identity and attractiveness for someone undergoing life’s difficulties.

Under these sensitive situations, it can be especially difficult to look for a wig. After all, the stress of a medical condition combined with treatments and doctor’s appointments can be overwhelming. Moreover, it can be embarrassing or intimidating to find the right salon or wig shop in which you have to share your pain and physical hardships. Will the stylist be compassionate and understanding? Among a stack of medical bills, can you afford the cost of a natural looking wig? How can you choose which wig is right for you when you already feel burdened with so many other decisions to make in your life right now? At Wig Works, while many of our clients come in to our shop to enhance their hair, we also have a large portion who are battling hair loss issues and we specialize in addressing their needs. As a two time breast cancer survivor, I know what it’s like to lose all of my hair and how precious my wig was to me as I faced each new day. While those times were immensely difficult, they gifted me with the compassion and passion for helping others who are facing the struggles that I went through. I find great joy in helping cancer patients find the wig that is most like their own hair and is complementary to their face and style. (And another great thing is that many of our clients continue to wear wigs after their hair grows back because they then realize how easy, convenient, and fun wigs can be!) If you have a medical condition, we would love to help you! We are sensitive to your circumstances and will find the wig that fits your style, budget, and lifestyle perfectly. Our goal is to help you look and feel your best in any situation.

About Janelle P.

I am proud to be one of the foremost hair loss specialists in the Bay Area with over thirty years experience in the field. At age 12 I began styling wigs for fashion and fun and assisted my mother after she established Wig Works in the early 1970’s. My passion for hair led me to Honolulu where I worked closely with legendary stylist Paul Mitchell. I had the honor to perform onstage platform hair styling with Mr. Mitchell, as well as legendaries Jean Braa, Zenon, and Alan Bush. I was also highly involved with the development and distribution of the Paul Mitchell line and later worked as a color representative for L’Oreal and stylist instructor for Matrix. I returned to the Bay Area and expanded Wig Works, with the establishment of Extensions for Hair. The revolutionary new hair extension method offered my clients with thin hair the opportunity to augment their style rather than relying on a wig or hair clip for length or fullness. These hair extensions are popular with women of all ages. Furthermore, I survived breast cancer twice and once lost all my hair from chemotherapy, so I have a unique perspective on special hair needs.
